Comcast Beta: Use Your X1 Cable Box To Play EA Games -

Back in June, we exclusively reported that Comcast was getting close to taking the wraps off of a new service that allows customers to stream mainstream video games via their set top box. As we noted at the time, Comcast would be partnering with EA to offer a suite of 40-50 games that can be played/streamed directly through compatible X1 set top boxes using a companion mobile device (iPad, iPhone, Android) devices as controllers.

A new Comcast blog post confirms our scoop, noting the platform will be called "Xfinity Games" and that interested users can now sign up for the beta.

"Comcast and EA are working hard to enhance and refine this new gaming experience and we look forward to making it available to many more customers soon," the company said in a statement. "We ll grow the catalog of games as we add more great experiences over the next year."

Though Comcast's announcement omits this, our source tells us that the beta will involve around 100,000 customers, and Comcast intends to formally launch the platform sometime in late August if everything goes as planned. The source also suggested that the final product will offer users access to an unlimited catalog of rolling content (like OnDemand) for an additional $10 a month.
